mass advertising & superbowl
Did you watch the superbowl? It's mind boggling to think of all the millions of viewers all viewing the same game at one time. The exposure is great to the advertising world. The ads displayed this year were somewhat creative. The one i'm still trying to figure out is the snickers bar commercial. Two men share a candy bar by starting to chew on it at each end simultaneously ( why didn't they just break it in half, ,it's a commercial.....I know). When they get to the middle they accidently kiss each other. Next, they are horrified that they actually kissed each other so they tear out some chest hair to do something manly to prove they aren't gay. I asked myself the question, "What did this have to do with a snickers bar?" Truth is, nothing. The objective point of the commercial is to grab your attention and to make that you don't forget it. The subjective point is probably to shock you with the audacity of the theme. Is it actually gonna sell more snickers? good question

I didnt see this particular commercial, but i agree with you that some of the snickers commercials are a bit ridiculous. The whole idea behind them is that hunger makes people do crazy things and snickers keeps away hunger. This isn't such a bad idea, except the commercials are just dumb. The one i've seen most recently is of a guy digging through a sheetrock wall to get out of his cubible, with a spoon. Another is of a husband bringing his wife home to a welcoming committee of cheerleaders. And on top of theyre stupidity, they're over-shown, sometimes even twice in a row!
haha conrad this is an amazing post and I know i'm reading it forever after you wrote it but o well. It just reminded me of how in the Merchants of Cool they talk about how we encounter about 3,000 discreet advertising messages a day. It makes you wonder what the "discreet" message is in these stupid/absurd commercials. Is it just that you do stupid things when you're hungry and snickers keeps you from being hungry (maybe like 10 of them will!) or is there more? Just a thought.
